President Iván Duque took advantage of this Wednesday, in commemoration of National Human Rights Day, to refer to the case in which a man died after a police procedure with a ‘taser’, in western Bogotá.

The head of state also questioned that the former head of the FARC Rodrigo Londoño has said, before the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP), that this group did not commit crimes of recruitment of minors.

The president said that all of us as a society must demand zero tolerance for human rights abuses by members of the Public Force.

He assured that although members of the Public Force have earned a place in the hearts of Colombians, “We have to be clear that there can be no tolerance when the uniform or authority is abused.”

“We have seen painful events today, but we have also seen the gallant, iron attitude not only of the Police commanders but also of the Minister of Defense and of the entire institutionality,” said the president.

“All of us as a society must demand zero tolerance for human rights abuses by members of the Public Force,” he added, and said that investigations must be carried out so that the norms are applied as they should be.

“We have to demand that timely, objective sanctions be applied and, of course, the product of rigorous investigations,” he said.

Regarding the case of Londoño, known in the war as ‘Timochenko’, the head of state was insistent that our democracy requires that the principles of truth, justice, reparation and non-repetition be truly applied.

“It is really worrying, it is regrettable that in the last hours we have seen the testimony of whoever was the FARC’s military commander and that he brazenly told the country that they never recruited minors,
that they never raped and never drug trafficked, “said the president

“And it seems serious to me because the truth has been ostensible. The country does not need in-depth investigation processes to know if these three criminal behaviors were committed, because they were committed before the eyes of the entire nation,” Duque said.
