Five municipalities in Huila are suffering the ravages of winter, which came with torrential downpours, overflowing rivers, landslides and floods that have destroyed bridges, roads, more than 100 homes and dozens of hectares of crops.

The most serious emergencies have occurred in the populations of Guadalupe, Acevedo, Altamira, Pitalito and Suaza, a municipality in which at least three peasants died as a result of a sudden flood in the Bajo Brasil village.
Franky Vega, Secretary of Government of Huila, confirmed the death of these residents and considerable material damage in the south of the department.
“Unfortunately, the rising of the Suaza river dragged three people into the Bajo Brasil village,” said the official, adding that the The victims are a 17-year-old boy, a woman and a 40-year-old adult.

The damages are so great that the Mayor’s Office of Suaza decreed a public calamity to deal with damages in most of the town’s aqueducts, roads and the gas supply.
“The Suaza rivers, and other streams, went out of their way and ended the roads in about 30 paths, but they also destroyed aqueducts, crops and houses of humble families,” said the authorities.

“I had not seen so much water fall in my life, the floodwaters were terrifying,” said a farmer. To all this are added Considerable damage at kilometer 35 of the Suaza-Florencia highway, Caquetá, where numerous vehicles were trapped in the area due to the overflow of the river.
The Suaza River also generated emergencies in the municipalities of Altamira and Guadalupe, where a large part of the urban area was flooded.
The Mayor’s Office of Guadalupe reported that the Divino Niño, San Vicente, Las Brisas, Santa Lucía and Aránzazu neighborhoods are flooded and the authorities clamored for help from the Huila governorate and the national government.
“We need colchogaviones to avoid a disaster due to the overflowing of the river,” authorities said.

The municipality of Acevedo also did not escape these damages and some 20 houses were destroyed by the avalanches.
In Altamira there are about 12 homes affected in the El Puente village due to the rising and overflowing of the Suaza River and the Cálamo stream.
In Pitalito, flooded homes, fallen trees, collapses and damage to the roads of some townships were reported.
The Government of Huila sent a technical commission from the Office of Risk Management and the Secretariat of Roads and Infrastructure that at this time is going through the affected areas for the evaluation of damage and risk analysis in Suaza, Guadalupe, Acevedo, Altamira and Pitalito.
“We are going to advance action plans to support the municipalities and families affected by this winter season,” said Franky Vega, Secretary of the Government.
