The Colombian government this week asked its counterpart from the United States to order the deportation of paramilitary chief Rodrigo Tovar Pupo, alias ‘Jorge 40’, who will be released this Sunday from his 12-year sentence that I had in that country for the crimes of drug trafficking.

The newspaper El Tiempo, revealed the letters that Ambassador Francisco Santos has crossed with the government of Donald Trump, where they notify him that Tovar Pupo still has pending to pay sentences in the country, one of them for the murder of sociologist Alfredo Correa de Andreis, at the hands of his men, who was assassinated on September 17, 2004 with information given to the paramilitaries by then-DAS director Jorge Noguera, also convicted of the crime.

Likewise, in Colombia, alias ‘Jorge 40’, there are still 80 criminal proceedings pending for homicides, massacres and disappearances that occurred between 1998 and 2006.

The deportation petition states that: “Considering the criminal charges pending in Colombia against Mr. Tovar Pupo, the Republic of Colombia considers his return to the country of utmost importance in order to protect the victims’ rights to the truth, justice, reparation, and guarantees of non-repetition … In this regard, the Ministry of Justice has requested information from the United States on Mr. Tovar Pupo, who was excluded from the Justice and Peace program and must return to Colombia in order to comply with the requirements of the judicial authorities and respond in the judicial process initiated against him on various criminal charges. “

If deported to Colombia, Tovar Pupo, will insist on being welcomed in the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP), after his expulsion from Justice and Peace, but the JEP has already notified him that they would accept him as a civil third party for his activities between 1996 and 1998, the time of his transition from rancher to paramilitary chief, but the rest of the criminal activities would remain under the orbit of the ordinary justice system.
