The National Registrar’s Office provided details on the issuance of the new digital ID for Colombians that will take effect from November and that it will be in accordance with the provisions of the electoral reform project presented by the electoral authorities to the Congress of the Republic.
The national registrar, Alexander Vega, explained that This new identity card will be necessary for citizens to be able to use their right to vote in elections digitally, when the electoral reform is approved.

However, the official pointed out that the current ID is still in force, but added that those who want to make the change from November, They can manage it through the duplicate process.
That is the citizens than have the traditional document they will be able to continue voting as usual, but people who wish to vote digitally, it is necessary that they have the new identity card.
According to the national registrar, this card will have a high level of security and it is produced with state-of-the-art processes and materials to verify biometric authentication, which will also allow Colombians to carry out procedures via cell phone, with the same validity as the physical document.
The Registrar’s Office explained that the use of the new digital ID will not be mandatory, but added that the entity will issue it to citizens who request it. The cost of this identification document will be the same as the duplicate procedure.

This new card will have a chip that will have identification information of the citizen who carries it and if he authorizes, it will also include data such as electronic medical records and traffic information.
For the next ordinary elections, people may continue voting in person with either of the two ballots, but other procedures such as remote voting, the citizen identification and authentication process, can only be done with the digital ID.
