The Line Tunnel will operate in one direction only: Calarcá – Cajamarca. It will be traveled by those who travel from Buenaventura to the interior of the country, saving 50 minutes on that journey.

“It is a gigantic achievement for the country, it is a work expected for more than 100 years. It is the work that brings the most benefits to the economy,” said Juan Esteban Gil, director of Invías.

The tunnel is 12.5 meters wide and 8.65 meters long, it has three lanes, but vehicles will only be able to travel on two.

It has galleries every 500 meters that connect it to the pilot rescue tunnel. This tunnel was initially used to get to know the mountain.

“Located in the central mountain range, 2,450 meters above sea level, this is a central forest reserve area and here having to build and excavate almost 1,4000.00 cubic meters of material from the mountain is a challenge, excavate them and know where to dump them Gil indicated.

The tour of the mega-construction will take approximately 12 minutes to exit to the Vermellón Portal, approximately 3 kilometers from Cajamarca. Invías indicated that the benefits of the work that will go into operation on Friday will be:

  • Increase in vehicle operating speed of the highway from 18 km / h to 60 km / h
  • Savings in travel times: approximately 50 minutes under normal conditions
  • Savings of 850 hours per year in road closure times
  • 100% decrease in accident rates in the sector
  • Saving of travel by the top of the Line of 21 km in the Armenia-Ibagué direction
  • Decrease of approx. 270,000 million in operating costs and transport logistics
  • Two lanes per direction in the 13.4 km mobility
