The official responded in Noticias Caracol, after being reminded that in several areas of the city the use of ICUs is increasing, even to the point of concern.

Gómez stressed that the ICU occupancy level is not the same throughout the city and added that, fortunately, Bogotá has a wide intensive care bed arrangement, which has grown from 300 to 560. “We have uploaded 260 ICU beds in 2 months,” he said.

Likewise, he stressed that there are “700 [camas de UCI] for other pathologies ”.

He added that the behavior of occupation is not the same throughout the city: “In the southwestern area —in Kennedy and in Fontibón— we have an ICU offer almost full.”

He noted that in the southern area the occupation is higher than in the rest of the city, but not as strong as in the southwest.

Finally, he stated that in the central-eastern and northern areas the occupation of beds is less.

Still, he clarified: “It is not that there are more patients in the southwest.” It is a situation compared to the offer that has been traditional.

“This pandemic gives us a golden opportunity to improve the supply of high technology in the south of the city because there is a condition of inequity: intensive care beds in the south of Bogotá are much less than in the north and we are also working in that sense”.

The figures on the map

In accordance with the secretary’s statements, the figures that the District updates every day show a red distribution of the healthcare centers in the towns of Fontibón and Kennedy.

Elsewhere, Suba, Puente Aranda and Santa Fe also have crowded hospitals, but not at the level of the southwestern zone.
