The document issued by the Ministry of the Interior He says that this portfolio has functions to “formulate and promote the public policy of religious freedom” and although no church or religious confession “is or will be official or state”, the Colombian State “is not indifferent to the religious feelings of Colombians.”

In that sense, the ministry calls “the entire interfaith sector of the country to a National Day of Prayer and Reflection for Colombia”, in response to the “request of some recognized religious entities in the country”, the circular reads.

“It is designated on May 15, 2020, to carry out as a family this national day of clamor for Colomia as a recognition within the acts of celebration alluding to the National Family Day,” adds the document signed by Arango.

The statement was criticized by several people on social networks, who complained about an alleged imposition of beliefs, and recalled that the vice president, Marta Lucía Ramírez, this Wednesday celebrated the consecration in the country, “to Our Lady of Fatima”.

In this regard, Minister Arango said on Blu Radio that the fact that the State is secular does not mean that believers do not have the right to express themselves and that it is a “symbolic issue” at no cost.

“It is a request from the churches. It seems to me that if this is a people that believes in God for the most part, they should be given the chance to pray together if they want to, ”he concluded.
