A series of lies that would have been issued by the captain of the cargo ship ‘Whisper’, added to alleged acts of indiscipline, carried out by the crew, resulted in 15 people being infected with coronaviruses on the island of San Andrés and Providencia.
In addition to a deceased sailor at sea, among those infected are: the entire crew of the ship, health personnel from the island and men from the National Navy.
Health authorities seek to establish possible contagions between merchants who would have brought food and liquor to the ship, as well as a group of sex workers which, according to the Governor of San Andrés, Everth Hawkins Sjogreen, was in contact with the ship’s sailors.

The question that is hovering today in the Captaincy of Puerto de San Andrés is: Why, once at sea, ‘Whisper’ did not continue on its way to Cartagena, but returned to the island with the infected crew, promoting the spread of the covid-19 there?
The ship that brought the most cases of coronavirus
In an interview with EL TIEMPO, the frigate captain, Luis Francisco Kekhan Niño, captain of the port of San Andrés, gave details of the itinerary of the cargo ship ‘Whisper’ before and after its arrival on the island.
‘Susurro’ left Cartagena on April 25 and arrived in San Andrés on the afternoon of April 27.
There, he made a first unloading of food for the island’s population, which also remains in quarantine.
The ship docked two nights in the port of San Andrés: until April 29, when it left for Providencia. There he arrived on the morning of Thursday, April 30, where he also delivered cargo.
On the island of Providencia he was docked for four days, until Sunday, May 3. Providence today has 4 confirmed cases of covid- 19.
On the night of May 3, he left again for San Andrés, where he arrived at dawn on Monday, May 4. Hours later, he set sail back to Cartagena de Indias.

However, “on the night of May 5, I was informed that the captain of the freighter ‘Susurro’ asked for permission to return to the port of San Andrés. When asked about the reason for his return, he indicates that he has a sick man on board. But we never understood why he asked to return to the island and did not continue on his way to Cartagena, a city with a larger hospital network, ”recalls frigate captain Luis Francisco Kekhan Niño.
At 0 am on Wednesday, May 6, the freighter ‘Whisper’ announces to the port that it is located near San Andrés. Get to the island at 3:15 in the morning. It anchors, but the port captaincy orders it not to touch island soil.
At 5 in the morning, the health operation begins to evaluate the alleged sick sailor, but the authorities find that the man has died.
“The captain of the ship is asked if any of his men have fever or symptoms of coronavirus and he replies no. He lied to us because not only was the crew contaminated but they were bringing a deceased on board, ”adds Captain Kekhan Niño.

All the crew and personnel on the island who were in contact with the ship underwent the covid-19 test. After being sent to the National Institute of Health (INS), they revealed that Two port health doctors who entered the ship are infected, as well as three members of the National Navy, who helped lower the lifeless body of the sailor. The eight crew members also tested positive.
“Unfortunately, I have to report that the results of the tests sent to the National Institute of Health show that we have 15 new positive cases. We have taken extreme measures by all means, precisely when the population complains about the government, which is doing the best possible to safeguard the population, ”said Everth Hawkins Sjogreen, governor of the Archipelago of San Andrés and Providencia.
The authorities in San Andrés are investigating especially what happened in the first two nights when the ship was docked in the port, in which a group of merchants reportedly boarded the ship for food, liquor and a group of sex workers who loitered in the early hours of the morning. Newball Avenue boardwalk.
“This ship is the one that has exponentially put the population of San Andrés at risk, increasing the cases of covid-19,” said furious Everth Hawkins Sjogreen, governor of the Archipelago of San Andrés and Providencia.
‘False prostitutes got on the ship’, ‘Whisper’ shipping agent
EL TIEMPO spoke to the ship’s maritime agent, who denies that the crew had access to prostitutes.
“That is totally false. This is a cargo ship that has prohibited the entry of external personnel and that is always guarded by the Navy. The confusion lies in the fact that many shrimp boats, especially foreigners, that anchor in the same area do get sex workers, but this is not the case of ‘Whisper’ and the Governor’s indications are very serious and false, ”he said. to this means the maritime agent of the boat in San Andrés, who asked to reserve his name.
He ensures that the eight crew members are in good health.
Authorities and inhabitants of the island are anxiously awaiting the results of new tests for coronaviruses carried out last Tuesday on a bulk of the population that was in contact with the ship.
