15 days without VAT: the proposal that would seek to revive the economy after quarantine

The proposal that has circulated in the Senate of the Republic to decree 15 days without VAT has been in the middle of a strong discussion.

One of the biggest problems caused by COVID-19 worldwide is the economic reactivation. This has raised several mechanisms to improve sales of businesses closed during quarantine. To avoid bankruptcies and boost sales and production, a proposal would be to decree 15 days without VAT.

The measure would expand the possibilities opened by the proposal of three days without VAT that the national government has advanced. According to the senator of the Democratic Center Álvaro Uribe, this measure would seek to help thousands of Colombians to buy cheaper products.

“At this juncture, these types of ideas should be creatively analyzed by the government,” Uribe told W Radio. To the same station, the representative of the Green Alliance Katherine Miranda said that it is a proposal seen with approval. He promised to promote it without distinction of the political party that raises it.

“The idea is good and we will seek to promote it in Congress, with the support of all political parties,” said Miranda. The congresswoman proposed that the VAT be reduced on Internet sales, to avoid crowds in stores.

Even so, the 15-day VAT-free proposal has not been applauded, especially since it would not help vulnerable populations, but rather another that has reduced its expenses but could have a series of additional benefits such as a debt quota. “This subsidy could reach people who do not need it (…) it would have a practical application problem, how to know what products have not been sold? It would be a nightmare for DIAN,” economist Mauricio Cabrera told the station.
