The results of an operation of Counterintelligence of the Army that gave way to the judicialization of 13 people, among other decisions, were made known last night by the Army Command.
The document refers to the so-called ‘Bastón’ operation, which, as explained by Carlos Holmes Trujillo, Defense Minister, in the interview with María Isabel Rueda that this newspaper publishes today, is the name of the “secret security files in the that the results were collected ”from various work missions on military personnel.
According to the Army communication, these missions began in 2017 and continue until this year; In addition, the institution indicated that their results have served to guide decision-making within the force.
The document states that three work missions have been brought to the attention of the competent judicial authorities and control agencies.
This, indicated the Army Command, has resulted, in addition to the judicialization of 13 people, the taking, in due course, of 38 administrative decisions.

The Army also explained that at the moment two work missions are in progress, while four others have been closed due to the lack of “no merit” for their continuity.
In that sense, The Army indicated that it will continue making the administrative decisions that may be applicable, in accordance with the counterintelligence activities they continue to carry out.
And regarding the legality of these operations, the Army reiterated that “the counterintelligence operations carried out by the Army are bound by the legal framework, guaranteeing the rights to good name, privacy, personal and family integrity, due process and reserve legal”.
The Army will not allow actions contrary to institutional principles and values that taint the honor of those whose mission is to protect Colombians.
On the other hand, the Army clarified that not only do the ‘Bastón’ counterintelligence activities exist, but they are permanent and are carried out when there is information about a phenomenon caused by internal or external threats.
“These types of activities are permanent, with the aim of preventing, detecting and neutralizing internal threats –Caused by the institution’s own members– and / or external –organized armed groups–, ”the statement said.
And he adds that counterintelligence operations also seek to protect human rights, the constitutional and legal regime.

The Army Command concluded by reporting that during the government of President Iván Duque, and within the framework of a policy of zero tolerance for corruption and illegal activities within the Military Forces, actions have been taken that have left 141 members of the institution at the disposal of the authorities, and 201 other administrative decisions have been taken.
Finally, in the statement, the Army reiterated its commitment to legality and indicated that “It will not allow actions contrary to institutional principles and values that taint the honor of those whose mission is to protect Colombians.”
