The Regional Indigenous Council of Cauca (CRIC) announced that 127 traditional authorities made up of 10 peoples associated with the CRIC, will not join the national vaccination plan against covid-19 implemented by the national government.
According to Ermes Pete Vivas, Senior Counselor of the CRIC, after an analysis of the situation they came to the conclusion that the effectiveness of the vaccine it is not 100% verified. He affirmed for EL TIEMPO that through the communications of the World Health Organization (WHO) does not give the certainty of having an effectiveness.
“For us it is a subject that they are rehearsing with us,” says the counselor. In addition, it adds that within the territories the ancestral medicine of indigenous peoples since the COVID-19 pandemic arrived, and with this a mitigation and containment plan has been made through the medicinal plants of the ancestral knowers.

He affirms that his daily activity and group meetings have not stopped, including the indigenous Minga that traveled to Bogotá and there were no sick people. “Here we continue, showing Colombia and the world that medicinal plants have been effective,” says Pete.
Finally, it denounces that the national government has not carried out the Prior Consultation with the communities in the face of these decisions. It has simply implemented the measures and is violating said regulations.
However, he affirms that this decision is not an obligation: “also to the commoners They have been informed that the decision will not be final either. If the community member wants to be vaccinated, he will do so after consulting information, informed and with the accompaniment of our structures such as the IPS, for the follow-up that has to be carried out ”.
