As if time had been returned to the times of false positives, today we are faced with a government that justifies the murder of civilians and minors, describing them as “war machines”. A terrifying legacy.
On March 3, the Ministry of Defense reported that 10 guerrillas from the FARC dissidents had died and another three had been captured, in a joint operation of the Military Forces and the Prosecutor’s Office the day before in Calamar, Guaviare, called Gentil. Duarte. Excellent news.
Now, on March 9, journalist Hollman Morris denounced that in the same bombing carried out by the Army in Calamar, 12 children were killed, a total of 14 young people. There the news environment changed.
Knowing Morris’s complaint, Defense Minister Diego Molano confirmed the bombing on Wednesday, March 10, and argued that he based the “legitimacy” of the armed action on the fact that it was directed against the guerrilla known as Gentil Duarte, leader of the attacked irregular structure.
Molano also said that the bombing was legitimate because the irregular armed group that operates in the area is characterized by recruiting minors, which makes them “war machines.” “We knew that there were structures that participated in harassment and that they were young. Age and sex would be determined by the Prosecutor’s Office (…) Here they are making a statement that there were 12 children. What there were here were war machines planning terrorist actions ”, were part of his statements.
Later there was a misinformation chapter in which the protagonist was Legal Medicine, an entity attached to the Prosecutor’s Office. Information was known in which this entity allegedly established that it was only a minor killed in combat, but later a statement from Legal Medicine came out to deny that without leaving a clear and official position on how many children were killed in the bombing.
Confuse and conquer.
Especially because of the context of this situation, since it is not the first time that the Government of President Iván Duque has assassinated minors in bombings and justifies its actions.
It was at the end of August 2019, according to the official statement, that the military bombed in Operation Atai a guerrilla camp in which the leader Rogelio Bolívar Córdoba died, alias Gildardo Cucho, and 13 of his soldiers.
Thanks to Roy Barreras’ complaints, it was learned that there were also minors who died in the attack. According to examinations by forensic authorities presented in Congress, among the deceased were a 12-year-old girl, a 15-year-old adolescent and another under 16.
This revelation and the fact that the Government had hidden it, as it concealed the murder of the minors in Operation Gentil Duarte, ended up costing the then minister, Guillermo Botero, who resigned to be awarded with the embassy in Chile on last February 23.
Today we know, thanks to intelligence report No. 937 of a “secret” nature and for “exclusive use of the Ministry of National Defense and the General Command of the Military Forces of the National Army”, published by Public Issue, that on August 24, 2019 – five days before the so-called Operation Atai – the Army knew that the security scheme of aliases Cucho It was made up of minors, a product of forced recruitment.
It doesn’t stop there.
On August 29, the same day as the bombing, another intelligence report, No. 940, was drawn up, in which almost the same data as report No. 937 is reiterated. Gildardo Cucho and the recruitment of indigenous minors, ensuring that there is a force of “15 men in arms”.
Thanks to the denunciations of congressman Roy Barreras in November of last year, it is known that at least eight were minors, between 14 and 16 years old, victims of forced recruitment and that they were part of the alias security scheme. Cucho.
A responsibility that former Minister Botero never recognized and neither has President Iván Duque, who authorized this operation that killed at least eight minors.
Now, unfortunately, history repeats itself with the Gentil Duarte operation leaving a balance of murdered minors victims of forced recruitment, a Defense Minister who justifies those deaths by calling children war machines and a President Duque with the same indifferent attitude .
