The deceased had not been to Leticia or the region, so it is worrisome that the strain is already circulating in the city. “The new strains of the virus, in particular the Brazilian one, have been circulating in Bogotá since January and in fact already in March we have evidence of circulation, death and transmission of people who were in the Amazon,” said Mayor Claudia López.
Despite this, the National Institute of Health reported that the man was in an intensive care unit and later died. “The case of this person remains under study because his infection was the result of a previous positive family contact, to whom information is being expanded.”
The mayor assured that in the city, from the Public Health laboratory and the University of the Andes, controls have been being carried out, since 13 mutations of the coronavirus would be circulating, for which she reiterated the call to maintain self-care measures, the use of masks, distancing, hand washing and ventilation in closed places.
“The city needs to avoid loss of life and jobs at all costs. They are urgently needed to vaccinate before May all those over 60 years of age who are the ones most at risk of becoming infected and dying; We must mobilize for immunization, ”said López, who also indicated that for this, at least two million doses are required in the city to be applied before May.
The first case of the Brazilian strain in the country was confirmed at the Leticia hospital. It was a 24-year-old woman with dual nationality, who lives in Tabatinga, but is affiliated with the subsidized regime in Colombia.
