7 young people die after falling from the fourth floor of a university

The number of deceased students increased to seven this Tuesday when they fell from a fourth floor after a railing broke in the Public University of El Alto (UPEA) in Bolivia, in some confusing facts that the authorities are investigating.

Young they attended an extraordinary student assembly, which was called by the Student Center, a meeting that led to protests and shoves that caused the railing to give way.

The Police Commander, Jhonny Aguilera, confirmed that the number of deceased students rose to seven, four men and three women, and their ages ranged from 19 to 27 years old, and that a total of 11 people fell after the railing was broken, one of them managed to fall to the third floor.

Regarding the investigation of the accident, Commander Aguilera stated “that First, the causes that motivated that meeting must be established ”, since these types of assemblies are not allowed by the pandemic.

Aguilera said that the videos provided by the university will be analyzed in which it is seen how two women struggle and one of her falls and dies and indicated that in the following hours the young woman who appears in the images will be cited that she was rescued by other students “to listen and find out what the versions have been” of this event.

At the time of the accident three students died from the impact and the other four died in hospitals those who were transferred, where the wounded remain with a reserved prognosis.

It’s a statement, The Public University of El Alto regretted the “fortuitous accident” and pointed out that the “fact is under investigation on the part of the Bolivian Police ”, in addition, the authorities of the educational center also“ have instructed an internal investigation ”.

From different sectors questions why more than 60 students were allowed crowded together on a single floor, without the distancing and biosecurity measures due to the pandemic, and under what conditions the holding of said student assembly was allowed.

In various videos circulating on social networks students are seen crowded protesting in the corridors that lead to a classroom, where the assembly was held, moments before one of the railings gave way and the eight youths fell from the fourth floor.

Speaking to a local radio station, the UPEA administrator, Henry Huanca, pointed out that there was an “assembly despite the fact that there is a resolution that prohibits assemblies, but they allow this group of students to enter (…) there was an assembly with confrontations and between pushes they fell like seven companions ”.

The president of Bolivia, Luis Arce, lamented the tragedy that occurred at the Public University of El Alto and expressed hiss “heartfelt condolences to the people of El Alto and the suffering families. We await the prompt clarification of the facts ”.

Also, several candidates of the subnational elections next Sunday they have suspended their activities and campaign closings in “solidarity and respect” for the lives that were lost at the Public University of El Alto (UPEA).
