President Ivan duque announced this Friday, in the middle of the Governors’ Summit, that next Monday, March 1, 117,000 vaccines from the pharmaceutical company Pfizer will arrive in the country, through the Covax mechanism.

In this way, the president pointed out that the country is the second in the world and the first in Latin America to receive these biologicals.

“We are the first country in America to receive these Covax vaccines and the second country in the world, because we prepare on time, because we also decided to make that multilateral agreement and have sustainability in the supply of vaccines“, assured the president.

In addition, the Head of State sent a message to those who criticized the country for entering into that mechanism.

“To those who said that Covax was not working, that this was not real and it was an illusion, the answers are the facts, because here we act with facts and thinking about the well-being of Colombians,” he added.

Duque pointed out that many people told him in December to look for 1,000 or 2,000 vaccines to take a photo, so as not to let himself win the “photo contest” in other countries, but he warned: “I do not proceed like that or act like that. President of the Republic to satisfy temporary vanities, but to work seriously, with sustainability for the well-being of the Colombian people, “he said.

So far, 100,310 doses of Pfizer and 192,000 of the Chinese pharmaceutical company Sinovac have arrived in the country, which, according to the National Vaccination Plan, in their first stage are being supplied to medical personnel and adults over 80 years of age.

This Thursday, the Head of State also announced that on March 7, 2 million vaccines against covid-19 from the Chinese laboratory Sinovac will arrive in the country, following a confirmed agreement with the president of that country, Xi Jinping.

What is the Covax mechanism?

In September of last year, Duque announced that the country signed the agreement with the Covax mechanism, which seeks to guarantee access for millions of people to safe and effective vaccines against the new coronavirus.

This Covax mechanism It is an alliance between different countries to be able to have access to safe and effective vaccines for covid-19 through agreements in which nations agree to acquire a specific percentage of doses.

“It is a global initiative aimed at collaborating with vaccine manufacturers, so that countries around the world have equitable access to safe and effective vaccines once they have been licensed and authorized,” explained the World Organization for Health (WHO).

“In this mechanism, what is expected is that they will acquire two billion vaccines throughout 2021 with an equitable distribution among the different countries that take part,” said the Minister of Health, Fernando Ruiz, a few weeks ago.
