The national steel industry will play a fundamental role in the growth of the country in the coming years. This was anticipated this Thursday by President Iván Duque during his speech at the inauguration of the Ternium industrial complex in Palmar de Varela.
“Steel means a participation of the industry in the transformation of Colombia. This product is present in infrastructure works, housing construction and energy transformation in the country ”, mentioned Duque, who highlighted the ‘Commitment to Colombia’ plan with investments of more than $ 130 billion and the creation of 2 million jobs.
“At the end of our government, we will deliver about 20 of 29 fourth generation projectsThe others will be finished a year and a half after our government and about 22 new ones will be put out to tender. To build these projects, this material is needed, so the demand and growth projection is assured for what is produced in this plant that will generate development opportunities in Colombia, ”said the president.
The president emphasized that the start-up of the industrial complex represents “a momentous step” for the import substitution of steel products by local production that meets internal demand and generates added value.
Ternium’s industrial complex has annual production goals of 520 thousand tons of steel bars and compact rolls per year. It is estimated that production represents 30% of what is produced in the country.
Duque also highlighted the entrepreneurial vocation of Atlántico and Barranquilla, which has been “Golden Gate for the enterprise to settle and that historically has been friendly with the migrant. Thanks to that helping hand, this migration in this region became an industrial pole ”.
On the other hand, the national president sent a message to the Congress of the Republic so that this year is “the year of social reforms”, leading to a greater expansion of “opportunities for vulnerable families, free education, Solidarity Income and PAEF ”with the aim of offsetting the ravages of the pandemic.
