Luis Vertel Urango is a peasant from the south of Córdoba. His story is incredible as it happened six years in prison after authorities found him guilty of a massacre in which he never participated. After several sleepless nights inside a cell, today he celebrates that justice was served.
Vertel Urango was sentenced to 40 years in prison for the alleged murder of 8 members of a family and it all happened because he has the same name as a paramilitary who did participate in that crime.

“I feel happy and happy to return home alive and well. It was very hard for me, I believe in justice. After 20 years of the massacre, he was caught serving a 40-year prison sentence.
“They said: ‘Carlos Castaño’s man fell’ and I cried. He asked why the law did that to me, why do they put me down like that. I am not a criminal nor have I participated in crimes, “said the person affected.
But the injustice couldn’t last forever and it was Jesus Ignacio Roldán Pérez alias’Monoleche‘who told the court that they were confusing Vertel.
“That man made me cry, when he saw me he said ‘Hey, you are nothing, you are being confused with a person who is older than you, taller, more nosy, curly hair and has gold teeth”, Narrated Luis Vertel Urango.
While in prison, they gave him one of the saddest news of his life: the death of his mother.
“They call me and tell me ‘your mom died‘It was a tremendous thing for me, ”Vertel said.
His case reached the Supreme Court of Justice, who evidenced the error in the identification and ordered his immediate release.
“When my family found out that they gave me freedom, they felt something incredible, my family was happy. I felt freeVertel concluded.
Luis Vertel Urango spent, by mistake, 6 years in prison. Today, after regaining the most precious thing, his freedom, he is more proud than ever to be a peasant. He only asks that his name be cleared, as the damage has already been done.
