In Isabel López they fear that the history of Jonestown will repeat itself. The fanaticism that put an end to the ‘temple of the people’ in the northeast of South America is a situation that they do not want to feel in this area of the Atlantic.
The fear in this village of Sabanalarga arose after a religious community, called Berea, announced that this January 28 “the holy church will enter the heavenly city of New Jerusalem.”
For the residents of this village of Sabanalarga, the events translate into a possible “collective suicide”.
“This has me nervous, the truth is that what they are doing is scary,” said Jorge Góngora, a native of this territory.
However, one of the followers of this church told EL HERALDO that “taking his life would go against his religious principles, that the announcement is about a promise of resurrection that they will see fulfilled this Thursday.”
“Those who sleep will be resurrected is what the Bible says in several passages, those who believed will be resurrected. The word says that if there is no resurrection in men, then it is denying that Christ was resurrected, that is what the Bible says and that is what we remain on, ”said the believer.
Another follower of this church assured that they are not a sect. “We are interested in what the word says, not what people say.”
What is evident for the residents of the El Carmen neighborhood is that the tranquility that usually haunted this sector disappeared for several weeks.
“We want them to find another place to worship, at night they do not let sleep because they pray and say strange things that cause fear,” said Martha Santamaría, a neighbor of the place where the services are held.
The place where the 17 followers of this congregation meet is located on Calle 6 with Carrera 11. The rustic-walled, high-ceilinged, seemingly ordinary-looking house hangs a countdown sign announcing “a great success.”
A long corridor divides the room from the rest of the place, there you can see children and other people who prefer to stay away from curious neighbors, only agreed to attend to the authorities who were present on Monday morning.
