It’s an easy trivia to answer: What do Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and Star Wars android R2-D2 have in common? That he is a steel robot, and she was called the Iron Lady. Whack quack! But there is a much deeper relationship between English politics and the George Lucas space saga.
It all goes back to May 4, 1979, the day Thatcher was appointed head of the government of England. It turns out that her party partners, the Torys or conservatives, decided to congratulate her with a message in the afternoon newspaper ‘London Evening News’, there they published: “May the 4th be with you, Maggie. Congratulations ”, which in Spanish could be translated as“ May the force be with you, Maggie. Congratulations ”, except that for a growing majority of young moviegoers, the message had another meaning.
Two years ago, the first Star Wars film, ‘Episode IV: A New Hope’ (1977) had been released, managing to generate a cultural movement that continues today, with millions of dollars in sales for a total of 11 films of the same franchise, as well as millions more per year for Star Wars brand merchandise and merchandise.
It was they, the first generation of Star Wars fans, who turned “May the 4th be with you …” into “May the force be with you”, that is, “May the Force be with you”, changing the sound English for “fourth”, for “force”, and to coincide with the fourth of May, they named this date as World Star Wars Day. The idea was well received by the Lucas Film company, owner of the rights to the saga, which has since promoted special events such as conventions, premieres and publications for this day.

Forty years after this celebration, and since the Covid-19 pandemic prevents any kind of massive event, the Disney company has scheduled on its Disney XD channel the premiere of the new series ‘Galaxy of Adventures’, eighteen short films based on the universe Star Wars, also from 9:00 pm The films ‘Episode VII – The Force Awakens’ and ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ will air. In addition, through its streaming platform Disney + they will have available the 11 films of the entire saga.
Luke Skywalker
His name Luke derives from the Greek word Loukas and refers to the Greek word leukos (light). Since the character fights against the dark side of the Force, the similarity doesn’t seem like a coincidence. It’s also hard to miss the similarity to the name of the Star Wars creator himself: George Lucas. In early drafts of the script, Luke’s last name was Starkiller. Although finally the author decided on a much more poetic and hopeful name: Skywalker (skywalker).
Darth Vader
I don’t know
Lucas once claimed that the name is a combination of two evocative phrases: death water with dark father. Although he was initially only known as Darth Vader, in the first three films, in the second series of 1997, it was learned that his birth name is Anakin Skywalker, a very powerful Jedi and father of Luke and Leia, but that he was corrupted by The Sith leader, Darth Sidious, and went to the Dark Side of the Force, his revelation on the verge of death is one of the highlights of the saga.
Princess Leia
Princess Leia Organa of Alderaan, is the twin sister of Luke Skywalker, separated at birth only known as adults in the middle of the war. She becomes the leader of the rebellion, and eventually marries Han Solo.
Chewbacca
Of the Wookiee species, this unforgettable character is Han Solo’s right arm. George Lucas was inspired by his dog to create it. The name Chewbacca closely resembles the Russian word for dog: sobaka.
Yoda
There are two probable sources of his name: yoddha, a Sanskrit word for warrior, or yodea, which in Hebrew means one who knows. Consistent with these meanings, Yoda is the Jedi Master, last of the ancient order, who is in charge of training Luke Skywalker to assume his leadership in the Galactic Civil War. He is a powerful warrior, despite his size, his power lies in that he managed to be one with the Force. His way of expressing himself in paradoxes and teaching has been compared to Zen philosophy.
Han Solo
Han is an archaic form of John (or Hans, Jan, Jean). And a pop culture antecedent of the surname Solo was found by Lucas in the character Napoleon Solo, a spy from the 1960s American TV series The Man from UNCLE. Han Solo appears in six of the eleven films in the saga, in most of them played by Harrison Ford, curiously in the only film where he is the protagonist, ‘Han Solo: a Star Wars story’ (2018) is played by another actor, the American Alden Ehrenreich.
How to watch the saga
For many experts in Star Wars, the correct order to see the saga and understand it in all its genealogical meanders is to follow each episode according to the internal plot of the story. In this way, confusion is avoided, since, as is known, the saga began in Chapter IV (1977), and only twenty years later, Chapter I (1997) was released.
According to George Lucas, “that’s the way to do it right: one, two, three, four, five, six. That’s how it’s supposed to be done. Just because it took a long time to film them doesn’t mean you shouldn’t see them in order. ”
In plot order:
Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1997)
Episode II – Attack of the Clones (2002)
Episode III – Revenge of the Sith (2005)
Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016)
Episode IV – A New Hope (1977)
Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
Episode VI – Return of the Jedi (1983)
Episode VII – The Force Awakens (2015)
Episode VIII – The Last Jedi (2017)
Episode IX – Skywalker’s Rise (2019)
The saga can also be seen following the chronological order of the premieres, so they can clear up unknowns, and meet other characters, in later films.
