The Barlavento Court of Appeal of Cape Verde has just cleared the way for the extradition of the Barranquilla Álex Saab Moran to the United States, which requires it for a mega-money laundering operation.
This was reported by the defense of the aforementioned figurehead of Nicolás Maduro – in an email sent to EL TIEMPO – who has already announced that he will appeal the decision to the Supreme Court of Justice.

“This decision is in direct defiance of the order of the ECOWAS Tribunal, dated December e, 2020, to suspend the extradition proceedings against Special Envoy Alex Saab until the main hearing that is scheduled for February 4 in Abuja, “the statement said.

And he adds: “The decision of the Court of Appeal is not surprising and only continues a deplorable series of decisions in which the Cape Verdean courts have refused to systematically address the arguments presented by the defense of the Special Envoy, violating the law and the Constitution”.
As of now, they announce that the defense will appeal to the Supreme Court of Justice, and will challenge “in the most energetic way possible the injustice of today’s decision.
It is also our intention to point out what constitutes a serious disregard by the Cape Verde Court of Appeal to the Honorable Regional Court of ECOWAS.

Sources in Cape Verde told EL TIEMPO that the file is now going to the Supreme Court (which had already had it in its hands) to review requested adjustments and process to rule on the merits: “This may happen in the next 15 days.”
Once this happens, if the Supreme Court’s decision is ratified, Saab will leave for Miami, despite the fact that Venezuela tried to give him immunity by appointing him plenipotentiary ambassador to Africa.

For the United States, it is clear that Saab is the key to reaching agreements between the Maduro regime with Iran, Turkey and Russia that could put the security of this side of the hemisphere at risk.
