With the beginning of 2021, the new Tourism Law came into effect, an initiative of the government of Iván Duque during the COVID-19 pandemic to stimulate domestic tourism and promote the reactivation of companies in the sector.

This law was enacted on December 31, 2020 by President Duque. One of its main points is the reduction of VAT on air tickets, from 19% to 5% until December 31, 2022.

Likewise, the reduction of national consumption tax rates on the sale of food and beverages to 0% until December 31, 2021; The payment of the sanction for the reactivation of the National Tourism Registry (RNT) until March 2021 is also eliminated.

The green light was also given extension of the special rate of 9% of income tax for the construction of new hotels, new theme parks and their remodeling; likewise, the construction time was extended from 4 to 6 years.

“This new law, an initiative of Mincomercio, will allow us to put tourism on the new path of economic reactivation after a supremely difficult year and the most interesting thing about this new Tourism Law, Law 2068 of 2020, is that it is a combination of short, medium and long term measures. Therefore, we are not only putting the elements for the immediate reactivation of the sector, but we are also thinking about our tourism sector in the long term, “said the Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, José Manuel Restrepo, in a statement.

San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina would also benefit from the law because of the 15 dollars that are paid for the national tourism tax, 0.5 dollars will be used to invest in competitiveness, promotion and infrastructure. Another 0.5 dollars will be used for the reconstruction of Providencia and Santa Catalina, during the 2021 term.

“Law 2068 of 2020, the new Tourism Law, will help our sector, which has undoubtedly been one of the most affected not only in the country but worldwide, and this new Law brings fundamental reactivation measures to strengthen the development of tourism, but also includes other measures associated with tourism sustainability and quality that will allow Colombia to position itself in the long term as a destination of very high quality and oriented to the conservation of heritage ”, highlighted the Vice Minister of Tourism, Julián Guerrero Orozco.
