At around 8:15 p.m. on Thursday, December 31, an Avianca airline plane had to land at El Dorado International Airport, in Bogotá, as the wings and one of the engines were entangled with the contents of a pyrotechnic balloon, which collided with the aircraft.

The plane, registration N557AB, did not register any serious damage, but sources assured that the situation did force an emergency device to be deployed on runway 13 L at the Bogota airport.
Immediately, An investigation was opened and the airport authorities recalled that the use of pyrotechnics in the vicinity of the air port is prohibited. The plane was arriving in Bogotá from Orlando, United States.
This newspaper established that Aerocivil and FAC personnel helped address the situation.
Sources from that airline, however, explained to EL TIEMPO that “the flight was never declared an emergency.” And they clarified: “There were no setbacks”.

They added that “the balloon reached the plane during the landing, having already touched the runway”, but they were emphatic that “people got off the board without problems.”
“There was an inspection of firefighters by protocol, but they did not report serious damage to the plane,” they said.
Experts told EL TIEMPO that if the internal material of the pyrotechnic balloon had entered one of the airplane’s engines, a tragedy would have been caused.
