Christmas in Colombia 2020: Police delivered balance, night with fewer homicides in 17 years – Crimes – Justice

The unprecedented celebration of Christmas in 2020, marked by social distancing due to the pandemic, left a positive balance in terms of the main crime rates. According to information from the National Police, the country had the lowest number of homicides during this holiday in the last 17 years.

With respect to 2019, the reduction in murders was 21 percent: while last year 64 homicides were registered, in 2020 there were 50. According to the first consolidated statistics, eight of these violent deaths correspond to fighting episodes, while that the others, at the end of this edition, were still being investigated.

Precisely, in terms of fights, there was a historical reduction of 38 percent in the number of episodes, which is the lowest in the last decade.

Another major factor had to do with the people who were burned by gunpowder on December 24. According to the preliminary report of the National Institute of Health, unfortunately 3 cases were reported (2 in Tolima and 1 in Nariño), which affected adults.

For his part, so far in December 288 people have been burned by gunpowder so far (of which 114 are minors), which shows a decrease of 17.9% compared to the last month of 2019, when 351 cases were reported.

As reported by the Police, they seized 196 kilos of gunpowder in different regions of the country, while the general figure in December amounted to 29.9 tons.

Calls to 123

During the night of Christmas, 46,110 calls to the 123 emergency line were recorded, that is, an average of 60 every minute.

Of these initial reports (subject to a subsequent debugging process) 4,814 corresponded to cases of fights.

Mobility and control over the roads

The initial balance of the Directorate of Traffic and Transportation indicates that between 06:00 pm on December 24 at 06:00 am on Friday 25 there were 24 road accidents in different regions of the country, which meant a reduction of 25 % compared to Christmas night 2019, when 32 accidents were reported.

Accidentally, 4 people (3 motorcyclists and a pedestrian) lost their lives for this cause (20% reduction), and 29 were injured (24% decrease).

Of the cases of deceased people, the first hypotheses determined that they were not associated with the consumption of intoxicating beverages.

In development of the controls installed on the roads, the uniformed officers carried out 1,639 drunkenness tests on drivers, of which 10 were positive.

Other results on the streets

Likewise, they were seized last night 920 bottles of adulterated and / or contraband liquor, valued at 3,952,584 pesos, while in the total of December the preliminary figure amounts to 4,233 units.

On the other hand, last night 2 injured were reported as a result of stray bullets in the city of Bogotá and Cúcuta: a 9-year-old minor, in the El Codito neighborhood, Usaquén town, who presented a wound in one of his legs and was transferred to a hospital center; and a girl under 7 years old, affected in one leg.

The National Police has made 89 arrests since Thursday (6 in flagrante delicto for homicide, 14 for theft, 9 for personal injury, among others).

In addition, 398 illegal parties have been intervened: 244 on December 24 and 154 on December 25.

Violations of the Citizen Security and Coexistence Code

Last night the Police attended 4,031 behaviors contrary to coexistence contemplated in the National Code of Security and Citizen Coexistence, especially in Bogotá (1,176 cases), Cali (255), Barranquilla (217), Medellín (204) and Cartagena (161).

The most recurrent behaviors contrary to coexistence were due to the carrying sharp weapons (1,480), for fighting (202) and for disrespecting the police authorities (95). Likewise, contrary behaviors were recorded such as manipulation of gunpowder or pyrotechnic articles (31) and affectation to tranquility related to excessive noise and scandal (35).

Regarding non-compliance with health measures, 1,510 subpoena orders were imposed for: selective isolation (849), non-use of masks (433), consumption of alcoholic beverages (167), crowding of people (17) and restriction of mobility (13), among others.

Additionally, it launched the new model of police mediation, as a strategy to mitigate acts of violence on public roads. Only in the Christmas celebration, 97 police mediations were carried out (91 ‘in situ’ and 6 in police stations).
