The covid-19 will surely be located in 2020 as the main cause of death in Colombians, according to the new report on vital statistics from the National Administrative Department of Statistics (Dane) with data from January 1 to October 31.

This document reveals the birth and mortality data so far this year, a comparison compared to 2019 and a balance on confirmed and suspected deaths from covid-19 in Colombia.

Specifically, deaths caused by the category “rest of certain infectious and parasitic diseases”, among which those confirmed (35,703) and suspected (10,651) of covid-19 represent almost 99 percent, they were one in five that the country registered.

In exact numbers, Until October 31, covid-19 was related to 46,840 (19.67 percent) deaths of the 238,121 that were registered in the country at that cut.
This proportion is higher in men, since the “rest of certain infectious and parasitic diseases” accounted for 21.7 percent of all deaths in them, while in women they were 17 percent.

In this way, covid-19 is above the causes of death that historically predominated in Colombia. So far this year, for example, Ischemic heart diseases (heart attacks) caused 34,817 deaths in men and women, occupying the second place with 14.62 percent of the total.

In men, homicides are in third place with 9,058 (6.7 percent), followed by cerebrovascular diseases (4.4 percent), chronic diseases of the lower respiratory tract (3.9 percent), hypertensive (3 percent) and land transport accidents (2.7 percent).

The impact of covid-19 was so great this year in the country that it is the leading cause of death in 22 departments, including Bogotá, where it represented one of every three registered (34.1 percent). The Atlantic has the same proportion. In Bolívar, deaths from the pandemic were one in five, in Santander and Sucre one in four and in the Amazon half.
