The Novena de Aguinaldos is an almost exclusive Colombian tradition. The novena —without the Christmas bonus— is a Catholic ritual in which, for nine days, a specific saint is asked for help to specify an intention. According to the Catholic Church, one of the most important novenas historically has been that of preparation for Christmas, celebrated since the Middle Ages in Spain and France, to commemorate the pregnancy of the Virgin Mary. The ritual is popular in Colombia and brings together families and friends every year, However, in this year 2020 it is important to remember that it must be done with precautions or virtually, the covid-19 is in force.

This tradition begins on December 16 and every day Colombian families gather to pray for the arrival of the child God., who will be born on December 25 at 00:00.

Today, December 20, 2020, the fifth day of this ritual is fulfilled, below we leave you the order of the day, the songs and the prayers.

INTENTION OF THE FIFTH DAY

We have already seen the life that the Child Jesus led in the womb of his most pure Mother, let us see today all the life that Mary also led during the same period of time. Today we need not to have in it if we want to understand, insofar as it is possible to our limited capacity, the sublime mysteries of the incarnation and the way in which we have to correspond to them.

Mary did not cease to aspire for the moment when she would enjoy that earthly beatific vision; the face of God incarnate. I was about to see that human face that should illuminate the sky for all eternity, I was going to read filial love in those same eyes whose rays should forever spread happiness to millions of the chosen ones. I was going to see that face every day, every hour, every moment, for many years. I was going to see him in the apparent ignorance of childhood, in the particular charms of youth, and in the reflective serenity of old age …

He would do everything he wanted of that divine face; he could hold her against his with all the freedom of maternal love; cover with kisses the lips that should pronounce the sentence on all men; to contemplate it as he pleased during his sleep or awake, until he had memorized it … how ardently he desired that day!

Such was the expectation of Mary that it was unheard of in itself, but that did not stop being the magnificent type of the whole Christian life. Let us not be content with admiring Jesus residing in Mary, but by essence, power and presence. Yes, Jesus is continually born in us and from us, by the good works that he makes us capable of accomplishing and by our cooperation with grace; so that the soul of the one who is in grace is a perpetual womb of Mary, an endless interior Bethlehem.

After communion, Jesus dwells in us, for a few moments, really and substantially as God and as man, because the same Child who was in Mary is also in the Blessed Sacrament. What is all this but a participation in the life of Mary during those wonderful months, and an expectation full of delights like hers.

Most benign God of infinite charity, who so loved men, that you gave in your son the pledge of your love, so that, made man in the womb of a Virgin, he would be born in a manger for our health and medicine; I, on behalf of all mortals, give you infinite thanks for such a sovereign benefit.

In return to him I offer you the poverty, humility and other virtues of your humanized son, pleading for his divine merits, for the discomfort in which he was born and for the tender tears he shed in the manger, that you dispose of our hearts with deep humility, with love on fire, with such contempt for everything earthly, so that the newborn Jesus may have his cradle in them and dwell forever. (Glory to the Father – 3 times-).

Sovereign Mary, because of your great virtues and especially because of your humility, you deserved that a whole God chose you as his mother, I beg you to prepare and dispose of my soul and that of all those who at this time made this novena, for the birth of your beloved son. O most sweet mother, communicate to me something of the deep recollection and divine tenderness with which you awaited him, so that you make us less unworthy to see, love and adore him for all eternity. Amen. (Hail Mary – 3 times-).

O most holy Joseph, husband of Mary and adoptive father of Jesus! Infinite thanks I give to God because he chose you for such sovereign mysteries and adorned you with all the gifts provided to such excellent greatness. I beg you, for the love that you had for the Divine Child, embrace me in fervent desire to see him and receive him sacramentally, while in his divine essence I see him and I enjoy him in heaven. Amen. (Our Father, a Hail Mary and a Glory to the Father).

Prayer to the Child Jesus:

Remember, oh sweetest Child Jesus !, that you said to the venerable Margaret of the Blessed Sacrament, and in her person to all your devotees, these words so consoling for our poor, burdened and suffering humanity: “Whatever you want to ask, ask for it for the merits of my childhood and nothing will be denied you ”. Full of confidence in you, oh Jesus, that you are the same truth, we come to expose you all our misery.

Help us to lead a holy life, to achieve a blissful eternity. Grant us by the infinite merits of your childhood, the grace of which we need so much. We give ourselves to you, O almighty Child!, Certain that it will not frustrate our hope, and that by virtue of your divine promise, you will welcome and favorably dispatch our supplication. Amen.
