This is how the referee and the VAR decided the controversial hand in Coquimbo-Junior

Conmebol released this Thursday the video that shows the dialogue that the Peruvian referee Víctor Carrillo held with those in charge of the VAR while they were checking a hand in the area, in the game that Junior beat Coquimbo Unido 1-0, in the quarterfinals final of the South American Cup.

The men of the video arbitration alerted Carrillo of the hand and one of them pointed out that it was unnatural, that it should be marked as a criminal. However, the whistle remained reluctant and claimed that he had not seen anything illegal.

The VAR judges asked him not to resume and to observe Paul Gatica’s hand when he marked Miguel Borja on an aerial ball. The image clearly showed the penalty, but the referee was sustained in his initial decision and did not consider it a charge from the twelve steps.

This was the last part of the dialogue:

WHERE: For me it is criminal. Now let’s go to the app, let’s go back.

WHERE: Victor, I recommend an OFR for a potential penalty. The forward is with an unnatural, open hand and hits the ball in his hand.

Referee: The front?

WHERE: The defender.

Referee: I see that he is pointing the ball and then, wanting to head, the ball falls on his arms. But he doesn’t make a further move, okay?

WHERE: OK perfect. Free shot.
