Molano is an architect and was director of the IDRD until December 2019. On Wednesday morning, the Minister of the Environment, Carlos Eduardo Correa, confirmed his appointment as director of National Natural Parks of Colombia.
The former director of the District Institute of Recreation and Sports during the mayoralty of Enrique Peñalosa, Orlando Molano, was appointed as the new director of National Natural Parks of Colombia this Wednesday. Since yesterday, various media and renowned environmentalists announced Molano as the successor of Julia Miranda, who was in the direction of the entity for more than 16 years. However, until now, the news had not been confirmed. (You can read: Minister of the Environment asks for the resignation of Julia Miranda, director of National Parks)

Molano is an architect from Universidad la Gran Colombia, has a specialization in Construction Management from U. Javeriana and a master’s degree in business management. He has worked in different public entities such as FONADE, the Administrative Department of Community Action – DAAC and the Institute of Recreation and Sports – IDRD, where he was director until December 2019.
Since Tuesday afternoon the reactions to the appointment of Orlando Molano have been unfavorable, mainly by renowned academics in the environmental sector. For many of them, Molano does not have the necessary experience to lead the country’s most important entity for the protection and conservation of biodiversity, the environment and protected areas. They criticize the development of controversial projects in parks in Bogotá during his leadership of the IDRD, implementing the felling of trees for the construction of recreational parks and synthetic fields.
The former Minister of the Environment, Manuel Rodríguez expressed his dissatisfaction through Twitter.
For 60 years, the management of Natural National Parks was in charge of renowned environmental experts, who in all cases were highly successful. Why and what for the new minister of the environment @CarlosECorreaE broke such a virtuous tradition? @ParksColombia

Senator Antonio Sanguino, for his part, recalled Molano’s management when he was in charge of the IDRD and criticized his work with the parks of the Colombian capital.
Orlando Molano, the new Director of National Parks d @MinAmbienteCo He is sadly remembered for his predatory management as Director d @IRDC d Bogotá in Admon Peñalosa. Took trees and forests to build synthetic fields! https://t.co/YuH6y391mW

Germán Andrade, a Biologist who advised National Parks in its management, announced through his Twitter account that, due to the appointment, he is withdrawing from the group of experts on biodiversity and protected areas that had been accompanying the decisions of the current government. These were other reactions:
The new director of @ParksColombia He justified cutting down thousands of trees and paving a round of wetlands for bicycle paths, obsessed with making the natural green synthetic and efficient subordinate of the environmental predator Peñalosa, @MinAmbienteCo ass tight pal
