Villar Gómez is an economist from the Universidad de los Andes and has a master’s degree from the same university. He did a PhD (with unfinished thesis) at the London School of Economics and Political (LSE).

In 1989 he was advisor to the Foreign Trade Directive Council of the Ministry of Economic Development, Proexpo, Incomex.

In 1991 he was technical vice president of Asobancaria, the banking union. Between 1992 and 1994 he served as Vice President of Economic Investigations of the Foreign Trade Bank (Bancoldex), then he was appointed Technical Vice Minister of Finance until 1997.

In that year he was appointed as a member of the Board of the Banco de la República and served for 12 years and two months. For nearly 21 years he was a professor at the universities of the Andes, Nacional, Javeriana and Rosario.

Between 2009 and 2012, he was chief economist and vice president of Public Policies and Development Strategies at the Development Bank of Latin America (CAF). Starting in 2012 and for eight years he was executive director of Fedesarrollo and, currently, he holds the position of Executive director for Colombia, Costa Rica, Honduras, Mexico, Spain and Venezuela of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

After this election, the board of directors of Banco de la República thanked Juan José Echavarría for his management during these four years, during which time the entity made progress in modernization and efficiency processes, and the international and local reputation of the company was maintained. entity, says the entity’s statement.

Upon learning of the board’s decision, the director of Fedesarrollo, Luis Fernando Mejía, pointed out that “Leonardo Villar is a great macroeconomist, with an outstanding career and with a deep knowledge of monetary and exchange issues, given his experience as co-director of the bank. , former Vice Minister of Finance and former Director of Fedesarrollo. The management of the Banco de la República remains in excellent hands ”.

Villar will be in the bank during the period 2021-2025, but with the possibility of continuing until 2033.
