Now, part of the merchandise in Bogotá will be moved on cargo bikes. This was confirmed this Wednesday by the District Mobility Secretariat with the launch of the ‘Bici carga’ pilot, which will operate for six months to test this sustainable distribution model.

The plan will work in partnership with more than 15 private companies that will migrate and strengthen their services with electric cargo bicycles in the final stage of product distribution. Many of the companies had already started these processes of incorporating cargo bike fleets.

“A large part of the mobile sources of particulate material come from the cargo sector. This project is fundamental and seeks to reform how cargo is mobilized in the last mile,” said the Secretary of Mobility, Nicolás Estupiñán.

The benefits of cargo bikes are not only environmental, but they respond to the new dynamics of electronic commerce and take up less space on the road network, improving mobility.

There will be two models: one centralized and one collaborative. In the first, distribution begins in the company’s warehouse and reaches the end customer: this model will be implemented with three companies in Usaquén, Engativá and Teusaquillo. The second consists of the implementation of a cross-docking platform, where different companies will use a single starting space to start the distribution on bicycles.

The pilot data will indicate the improvements that need to be made for the system to remain. It is worth noting that these charging systems are already being used in the rest of the world.
