Attorney General’s Office will investigate alleged irregular follow-ups from the Army

The Office of the Attorney General announced that it opened a disciplinary process to the Army for alleged irregular monitoring of journalists, politicians, NGOs and trade unionists for several months.

“By order of the attorney general, Fernando Carrillo, a special official is appointed to evaluate the facts, which according to information given to public opinion by the Defense Minister, would have led to the removal of 11 officers from active service ”, Communicated the Public Ministry.

According to the entity, this new process is in addition to the investigation initiated in January by the Office of the Attorney General against members of the National Army for similar events, derived from the search and search procedure carried out on December 18, 2019 at the facilities of the Miguel Antonio Military Canton. In this way, the Public Ministry will carry out tests in order to verify whether the facts revealed by an investigation by Semana Magazine conjure up a disciplinary offense. The Semana Magazine investigation ensures that 130 people including journalists, politicians, union leaders, NGOs and human rights defenders were ‘outlined’ by the Army between December 2019 and February this year.

With the help of technological tools, the Army would have collected data such as home addresses, telephones, emails, information from family members, journalistic sources and contacts of those intercepted, traffic offenses and voting stations.
