Although this road corridor has been restricted for several days in mobility, the National Highways Institute (Invías) decided to extend the closing hours of the road between Calarcá – Cajamarca. Traffic is suspended due to the risk of new landslides and due to the intervention and stabilization of the Bellavista slope at kilometer 38 + 900.

The shutdown was scheduled to end on Wednesday, but Invías extended it for two more months. On the road, only cargo and transport vehicles public passenger transport between 6:00 am and 2:00 pm, as long as there is no rain.

The vehicle closing time will be between 2:00 pm, and 6:00 am, the next day. Drivers of private vehicles must travel through Alto de Letras, since the traffic of cars and motorcycles is totally restricted.

The director of Invías, Juan Esteban Gil, pointed out that “the stabilization work of the slope that the technicians, engineers and workers of the Institute have been carrying out in night hours will continue to the extent that weather conditions and slope behavior allow it ”.

The rains of the last few days caused the saturation of the soil on the Bellavista slope, precisely where Invías had been carrying out stabilization works since last October. This is a critical site and the embedding of tunnel 16 was generated, affecting the works that the entity had been carrying out.

“The commitment and 24/7 work of the Invías engineers and operators have allowed important advances to overcome the emergency in the corridor, however, still Conditions persist that put the safety of users at risk, so we decided to extend the preventive closure in order to provide a definitive solution that allows the safe restoration of traffic through this strategic route ”, stated the Minister of Transport Ángela María Orozco.

According to Invías, they must remove at least 75,000 cubic meters and, in addition, works must be carried out for the technical treatment that facilitates the stabilization of the slope. “This makes it a highly complex job that requires guaranteeing the highest security conditions for users of the corridor, as well as for Invías staff.”
