Gabriel Arango Bacci, who was imprisoned for 18 months, between 2008 and 2009, spoke about the ruling of the Council of State that ordered the Attorney General’s Office to apologize and compensate him.
According to the retired officer, he was “accused of having ties to drug trafficking, with a false fingerprint that unfortunately appeared four months after having successfully finished the Central American Games and being the director of the Naval Academy.”
“Who can think that an admiral of the Republic is going to put a fingerprint on a receipt for a drug trafficker after having made a career of 36 years?” He questioned about that accusation.
For him, his arrest was produced by “some three or four misfits who were in the intelligence and counterintelligence of the Navy and were acolyzed by a minister at that time without criteria, such as the minister (Juan Manuel Santos
at the time. He was not able to tell them ‘investigate, check what happened’ ”.
The alleged plot against him, he said, was motivated by their envy of him and involved him in a “whirlwind of lies.”
On the case, he asked “the courts to bring the intellectual authors to light. They only caught three false witnesses. One was sentenced to 8 years, another was murdered in Barranquilla and the other is being tried ”.
For him, those who orchestrated the plan against him were Admiral Guillermo Barrera, commander of the Navy at that time, and Admiral Álvaro Echandía.
“I do not have the evidence to tell them ‘you went’, but the evidence and everything that happened with the process indicates that there was a great interference on Minister Santos, who did not have the character and personality to say ‘investigate the case ‘and was fooled by the misfits, “he said.
Arango Bacci ruled out taking any kind of action after the ruling of the State Council.
“I was not very interested in the economic part from the beginning,” he affirmed, and revealed that “5 years ago the Prosecutor’s Office offered me 700 million pesos in reconciliations and I told them twice that no. For me it was not the money, it is the honor and dignity of my family and my institution ”.
