Juan Carlos Granados Becerra, who this Wednesday has just been chosen with 186 votes in Congress As one of the seven members of the National Commission for Judicial Discipline, he will be charged this Monday for the Odebrecht case in a hearing at the beginning of the trial in the Special First Instance Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice.

Granados Becerra was nominated by President Iván Duque to be a member of that commission, Despite the questions against him, since since November 2018 the General Prosecutor’s Office charged him with allegedly trying to benefit Odebrecht when he was nominated and then governor of Boyacá between 2012 and 2015.

Despite all this, Granados, who was also the comptroller of Bogotá, was elected with a devastating vote. Gloria María Arias Arboleda, the second candidate who got the most votes in that shortlist, obtained 33.

After the accusation that the Prosecutor’s Office made against him before the Superior Court of Bogotá, the trial corresponds to the Special Court of First Instance of the Supreme Court of Justice.

EL TIEMPO learned that this Monday Granados will have to attend the accusation against him in the high court, cited since August 20 of this year.

The hearing will take place at 8:30 in the morning, and will be chaired by Judge Ariel Augusto Torres Rojas, who is in charge of the process.

With this case it is clear that Granados will start his magistracy with a trial in tow. The Judicial Discipline Commission that he will integrate must be formed before this December 20, and his period of 8 years as a magistrate will start on January 11.

In those eight years Granados and his colleagues will have key functions such as investigating and disciplining judges, lawyers and prosecutors, Therefore, if a case comes against any of its investigators or those who have been part of the case for which it will be tried, it would have to declare itself impeded. The same could happen if any case related to Odebrecht falls into their hands.

According to the accusation that the Prosecutor’s Office developed against him, Granados – who has repeatedly said he is innocent and did not accept the charges – received money from Odebrecht to try to award him the Duitama-Charalá-San Gil road work.

Although the Prosecutor’s Office and the Attorney General’s Office had requested the security measure against Granados in 2018 – alleging that since he was the Comptroller of Bogotá at that time, his freedom implied a danger for the process – he He is free because in November of that year the Superior Court of Bogotá refused to impose that detention, and he said there is nothing to prevent him from facing trial without being in prison.

During the indictment, Granados said that although he did meet Luiz Bueno and Eleuberto Martoreli, executives of Odebrecht, he did so when he was governor and not as a candidate. In any case, He denied that he had received money to try to benefit them with the work.

According to the prosecutor, the former governor allegedly received between 3 and 5 percent of what the work cost. And in the process there is also an alleged payment that came through former senator Plinio Olano Becerra, from 200 million pesos, whose objective was supposedly to finance the campaign for the governorship of Granados.
