The Venezuelan president reported that as of Monday, the curfew will be lifted in the municipalities bordering Colombia and Brazil, which did not enter the 7 + 7 program because they concentrated a large number of active cases of COVID-19.
Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro announced this Sunday that he will lift the curfew imposed in the municipalities bordering Colombia and Brazil due to the pandemic, and that he will relax a quarantine in force during the month of December.
Since June, Maduro has been applying a scheme that he calls 7 + 7: seven days of “radical” confinement that force the closure of shops – except supermarkets, pharmacies and other establishments considered essential – alternated with seven days of “flexibility” that allow opening.
“Last week of this year 2020 of radical quarantine,” said the president in a television broadcast. “The dynamics of expansion of commercial and social and economic activities … we are in the spirit of Christmas.”
“The 7 + 7 will be resumed in January with strength, organization, discipline and awareness,” he added. “We are in the middle of the pandemic and I do not want to make false offers to anyone,” he said.
Venezuela holds parliamentary elections next Sunday and in recent days the participating candidates have organized massive rallies in which social distancing is non-existent and many attendees do not wear the mandatory mask.
“Even with the electoral campaign and increased circulation of people on the street, in the week of flexibility the 7 + 7 method has met the objective,” Maduro congratulated himself, reading from an official report.
Maduro also reported that as of Monday, the curfew will be lifted in the municipalities bordering Colombia and Brazil, which did not enter the 7 + 7 program because they concentrated a good number of active cases of COVID-19.
“We maintain epidemiological surveillance, security measures, prevention and attention. We keep our arms open for all the migrants who are arriving, we maintain preventive health measures, detection, quarantine for those who arrive … the only thing that all that social activity is allowed, “said Maduro.
In the last 24 hours, Venezuela reported 280 new cases with two deaths, according to official figures questioned by the opposition and specialized NGOs.
