Last Sunday, November 22, the Institute of Studies for Development and Peace (Indepaz) confirmed the murder of ten people in the rural area of the municipality of Betania, Antioquia. The victims were chatting when they were indiscriminately surprised by the shots fired by alleged members of the Clan del Golfo.
A week later and during the afternoon of this November 29, the Office of the Attorney General of the Nation announced that in a joint action of the CTI and the National Police, the capture of “aliases Luis, aka Blood, aka Furry and aliases Bob is”.
The authorities confirmed that the crime was perpetrated at the La Gabriela farm, located in the la Julia village, in the vicinity of the Betania municipality, 30 minutes from the urban area.
As reported by the EFE agency, the Antioquia governor, Aníbal Gaviria, affirmed that the ten fatalities were coffee pickers, of which three were Venezuelan migrants and several more arrived there from other municipalities in the region.
“In record time, the Dijín Judicial Police captured three subjects and apprehended a minor belonging to the southwestern Antioqueño substructure of the Gulf Clan, who would be allegedly responsible for the murder of 10 people last week in Betania. Congratulations!”, said Defense Minister Carlos Holmes Trujillo, on his Twitter account.
According to the local media, Carlos Mario Villada, mayor of Betania, the violence in the area is due to micro-trafficking:
Apparently the disputes over the places of vice in our municipality was what caused the massacre.
On the other hand, the local mayor explained in an interview with the FM, that in addition to micro-trafficking, the presence of these events in the area is due to a rupture within the criminal group:
“In that farm they went after alias El Monstruo. The division that exists in that clan is what has altered the municipality of Betania. We know that the modus operandi went from the municipal seats to the rural areas. In these coffee farms, two or three people settle there and set up their offices. From there they begin to distribute to the neighboring farms “.
Minister Carlos Holmes Trujillo, assured in the security council that he presided over in that town on November 23, that the authorities offered a reward of up to 200 million pesos for information that allows the capture of aliases Ruben, whom he pointed out as the head of the Clan del Golfo group that operates in that part of Antioquia.
This massacre followed one that occurred on November 3 in which five people were murdered in a rural area of the municipality of Nechí, also in Antioquia, where those who were chatting in a pool hall were shot.
According to the latest report by the Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, at least 42 massacres have been perpetrated this year in Colombia, along with the murder of 48 social leaders and human rights defenders, including nine from ethnic communities and five women.
