The extension will go down Calle 72 to Av. Ciudad de Cali, which will decongest the trunk lines of the 80 and the Suba. It will also connect with Transmilenio and Regiotram.

As the mayor Claudia López had foreseen, the city already has the first two stages of the pre-feasibility study ready for the extension of the Bogotá Metro to Suba and Engativá, which will join from Calle 72 with the first part that has already been contracted .

The studies, carried out by the British consultancy Steer and the French Egis, who were contracted by the National Development Finance (FDN) define the characteristics for the construction and the layout of the extension that will go along 72nd Street and take Av. Cali city.

In this regard, the manager of the Metro, Andrés Escobar, indicated that the selection of the new route was made “in a process of screening by layers, the 13 with the best characteristics were preselected, until reaching the 6 main corridors. All of them were measured according to 31 indicators that showed that the expansion should start from Caracas avenue with 72 street, heading west, until taking Ciudad de Cali avenue and reaching Suba ”.

Among the indicators are the demand for public transport, the environmental impact and modal integration, as well as the social benefits, the risks and the investment to be made. Likewise, it was determined that a greater number of passengers would be transported through this corridor, the trunk lines of Calle 80 and Suba will be decongest, in addition to having a less impact on the public services networks.

This expansion will benefit about 2 million inhabitants, just over 300 neighborhoods in both towns and will help decongest the trunk lines of Calle 80 and Av. Suba. This line will be integrated with Transmilenio and Regiotram.

“When we said that Bogotá’s mass transportation system was going to be based on a Metro Regional network, instead of just Transmilenio trunks, it was serious. The Metro, as we promised from day one, will reach Suba and Engativá, ”said Mayor Claudia López.

With the route determined, the next step is the pre-feasibility studies, with which they will define whether the expansion of the Metro will be elevated, underground or level, along with other characteristics such as the number of stations and their location, in addition to the total value of the project and its cost / benefit. This, according to the mayor’s office, will be done in 2021.

If everything goes as planned by the District, by 2022, the co-financing agreement with the National Government would be formalized and if sufficient resources were available, the tender would be opened and with it the contracting of the new work.
