After Hurricane Iota that hit San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina, the United States government announced in the last hours that the humanitarian aid it has delivered to Colombia to help in the contingency they add up to 1 million dollars, which in Colombian pesos is equivalent to approximately 3,617,550,000.00 million.

Thus, the US ambassador to Colombia, Philip S. Goldberg revealed that his country increased aid tenfold for the affected islands to rise. In addition, it ratified the purpose of the United States to establish a “friendship” with Colombia.

“The close and lasting friendship between the United States and Colombia means that we are there for each other in times of need“Said Ambassador Goldberg.

How the aid was invested

The ambassador detailed every penny that he managed to help the Colombian territory and revealed that His country gave $ 550 thousand dollars (approx. 1,990,186.00 million Colombian pesos) that would be used to bring humanitarian transport to the victims. According to Goldberg, within this clothing there would be an airlift for San Andrés y Providencia.

The bridge began operating this week and is expected to transport at least 70 tons of humanitarian aid every ten days: food, water, medicines and sanitary implements.

On the other hand, Goldberg announced that of the million donated by the North American nation, $ 25 thousand dollars were allocated (approx. 90,414,750.00 million in Colombian pesos) for tools that allow the reconstruction of houses in San Andrés. Some of the instruments purchased are hammers, nails, screwdrivers and saw blades.

The ambassador also said that they donated $ 100 thousand dollars (361,847,000.00 Colombian pesos approx.) To the Colombian Red Cross in order to acquire debris removal equipment, communication and provide additional humanitarian aid, other than food.

“We are proud to support the people of San Andrés y Providencia as they face this devastating natural disaster. (…) -We have built for more than thirty years- a strong alliance with the Colombian government, with its disaster response agencies and its military forces that allows us to quickly deliver aid to more peoples “, said the US ambassador.

On the other hand, Goldberg mentioned that the Department of Defense donated more than 400 thousand dollars for Colombia to strengthen its humanitarian response faced with disastrous situations such as those experienced by the national archipelago recently.

In that sense, The ambassador said that he has managed flights of the United States Air Force to transport Colombian first responders and supplies. Further, the US government has arranged military personnel from the Embassy to help San Andrés, Cartagena, Barranquilla and Bogotá.

Last but not least, the Office of Humanitarian Assistance of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is working hard at this time together with the Government of Colombia to provide humanitarian assistance to the country and thus develop preventive strategies against the ‘fury of nature’.
