When this Monday night fell, Mayor Claudia López arrived at the place where Dilan Cruz was paid tribute, But what she did not count on is that she was going to have to leave guarded and hearing the boos of the assistants gathered in the place.

A year ago, on 19th Street with 4th cart in Bogotá, 18-year-old Dilan Cruz fell to the ground after being shot by a 12-gauge shotgun by agent Manuel Cubillos Rodríguez, of the Mobile Anti-Riot Squad ( Esmad). Two days later, at the San Ignacio University Hospital, just 20 streets after what happened, he died as a result of the impact.

Today, his family and citizens, tired of police abuse and impunity and not having concrete results from the investigation carried out against Cubillos Rodríguez, I meet in the same street where Cruz fell, after being attacked from behind in one of the days of the 2019 National Civic Strike.

At around 8 p.m., the mayor published a tweet in which she said she had peacefully met with the young man’s family:

“Today the mother and sisters of Dilan Cruz, whom I have supported in their just demand for truth and justice, were in the Mayor’s Office. They invited me to the event in which they paid tribute to her and I accompanied them with affection and respect. “Dilan did not die, Dilan is here a symbol of our country’s struggle.”

As reported by RCN, Dilan Cruz’s mother, Alejandra Medina, rejected the events and sent a message to the protesters:

“Young people please collaborate with the memory of Dilan, here no one is doing politics. We are not sold or bought, at least not Dilan’s family “the young man’s mother pointed out.

For her part, in the mayor’s most recent tweet, she stated:

The anger and frustration of many young people over police abuse and the deaths of young people like Dilan is understandable. I thank his family who have always invited to honor Dilan’s memory peacefully and asked that his memory and his pain not be used opportunistically for violence ”.

According to Dilan’s sister, Denis Cruz, the day began with a sit-in, in which artistic activities were held, at 2 p.m. LThe District Association of Education Workers (ADE), called the demonstrations from 12 am

An hour after the sit-in, at 3 p.m., an intervention was carried out in memory of Dilan, at the point of fall after the shooting of agent Manuel Cubillos Rodríguez. A cacerolazo was also held, an expression of social protest that gained strength since November 21, 2019.

At 6 pm, the candlelight began, to which not only those who demonstrated in the center of the capital, but also families from their homes, were invited to light a candle “for each victim.” Half an hour later, the family and those close to Dilan spoke a few words.
