Hitmen assassinated the well-known Barranquilla businessman Julio César Polanía on Sunday afternoon. The gunmen came to his restaurant, ‘El malecón de Las Flores’, located in the Las Flores neighborhood, near the Magdalena River, and shot him in the chest with a pistol with a silencer.
The hit men came asking for Polanía, A former candidate for the Barranquilla council, they fled in a gray Kia Picanto car.

Julio César Polanía Martínez, is listed as manager of the Sociedad Colombiana Exportadora Socoexpo and is linked to a company dedicated to the fattening of beef cattle for the industry, which provides services to a prestigious line of supermarkets on the coast, to which they provide service of load. His other company, a call center, has been managing the home address system for Olímpica stores for 17 years.
But the businessman became relevant when his name was mentioned by former senator David Char, prosecuted for parapolitics.
The former senator assured the authorities that his link with the self-defense groups began after Julio Cesar Polanía He introduced him to Carlos Mario García, alias ‘el Médico’, in charge of political affairs for the paramilitaries.

According to Char, alias’ el Médico told him about the work that “the self-defense groups had already been doing in the Atlantic.” And he added that through Polabía he also reached Édgar Ignacio Fierro, alias ‘don Antonio’.
“I met ‘Don Antonio’ at the time that Julio Cesar Polanía introduced him to me, on his wife’s birthday,” David Char assured in October 2019 in his public version before the Special Jurisdiction of Peace (JEP).
Declaration before the Court
In the file before the Supreme Court of Justice, in 2017, Char had already said that his relationship with the self-defense groups began because of the link with Julio César Polanía and ‘don Antonio’.

The foregoing was recorded in a telephone conversation on July 21, 2007 between Mario Marenco Egea, alias ‘El Gordo’, and Carlos Mario García Ávila.
Other testimonies held by the Court show that Édgar Ignacio Fierro Flórez, (alias Don Antonio) has repeatedly pointed to the businessman from Barranquilla Julio César Polanía Martínez, as an intermediary between him and Char.

That way, according to Char, he learned who was the candidate for the House pointed out by the ‘paras’: “We started talking about how we would develop the campaign. And one of the things he emphasized to me was that they needed the endorsement and I was in charge of that because I had the representation of Cambio Radical en el Atlántico ”.
According to the Court, Char would have approached ‘don Antonio’, again through Polanía, apparently to get him to modify his testimonies.

Other testimonies held by the Court show that Édgar Ignacio Fierro Flórez, (alias Don Antonio) has repeatedly pointed out the businessman from Barranquilla Julio César Polanía Martínez, as an intermediary between him and Char.
In the file, Polanía is referred to as the owner of a postal company and, in effect, his name appears in documents as the manager of a firm, created in 1997, dedicated to courier activities.
The authorities do not know if the crime is related to those mentions that Polanía never publicly referred to.
