Flexible dates
Once the announcement of the national president was known, Avianca suspended the sale of tickets and announced that it will inform its clients about its itinerary once the start date of operation is confirmed.
“The tickets that are marketed at that time will have flexible conditions recognizing and understanding that the dates of the emergency are subject to changes and government definitions,” said the company that disabled the online purchase option on its website.
The company recalled that since the health emergency generated by COVID-19 began, it has adjusted and adapted its itineraries “to be ready and fly again when the suspension of flights is lifted, under the strictest biosafety protocols.”
“Avianca will continue to adapt its itineraries, processes and operations to the extent that the country requires it and will follow the guidelines established by the authorities in this matter,” added the airline in a statement.
The airline had opened ticket sales for 7 national routes available from May 11 to 31, 2020, with a VAT of only 5%. It offered the alternative of changing the itinerary without penalty and without fare difference.
The airline was also the subject of a new controversy last week due to the request for financial support that it made to the national government due to the difficulties it is experiencing due to the cessation of operations during the quarantine.
“We have more than 140 planes on the ground, we have almost zero income, the only entry is by cargo, which is less than 10%,” said the president of the company, Anko van der Werff.

In turn, the Office of the Attorney General of the Nation had asked the Civil Aeronautics to certify whether the country’s airports will reactivate their operation from May 11, due to the sale that Avianca opened.
He also asked the Superintendency of Industry and Commerce to intervene to avoid user confusion, since the airline was already selling the tickets through its web portal.
