Senators Roy Barreras and Armando Benedetti, who announced their “definitive break” from the party of ‘la U’, did not resign but were said to have been expelled.

Thus, it was confirmed in a notification revealed by La W, which warns that Barreras lost his “status as a militant” for departing from his party’s decision to support Margarita Cabello as the Attorney General and for “refraining from presenting before the parliamentary bench the debate on political control against the Minister of Defense, also taking into account that the party is part of the government coalition of President Iván Duque.”

(In context: What does Roy Barreras’ ‘break’ with the ‘U’ party mean?)

These events are considered “very serious offenses in violation of the banking system.”

For his part, Benedetti was expelled for a violation of the “regime of Law 974 of 2005 and the Party Statutes for failing to fulfill the duties that acting on the bench entails.”

Barreras told EL TIEMPO on October 16 that his departure from ‘la U’ was “formalized” on October 15, the same date as the document known this Friday. However, he claimed that it was motivated by his resignation and for different reasons.

And Benedetti acknowledged this Friday that, after saying that he was leaving the game, he had himself “expelled or they ended up expelling me for those statements,” and added that by expelling him from ‘the U’ he can get into “any game”

According to La W, the president of the party, Dilian Francisca Toro, had not been informed of those decisions of her community, which were taken on October 9, in the case of Benedetti, and on October 15, in the case of Barreras, as seen in the notifications.

“So far, I have been in office for three weeks and the secretary had not informed me yet, he only did it today. What I can tell you is that I will do the rigorous legal consultations to define the steps to follow, “Toro assured La W.

This Thursday, Benedetti surprised with a video in which he announced that he is “walking” towards the movement that the former mayor of Bogotá Gustavo Petro and sure candidate for the Presidency guides.

Benedetti explained: “The center does not exist in any political theory, what happens is that in Colombia people feel sorry to say whether it is from the right or from the left.”

Benedetti was one of the most visible figures of the ‘U’ party. “One cannot be in a party that is neither the opposition, nor the government, that does not help peace, that does not help basic income, that does not help microenterprises,” he said.

“In that game I think I have left over and, therefore, I am going calmly. I hope they are also very calm and happy that I am leaving,” he explained.

In response Petro wrote on his twitter account: “Welcome!”
