After the passage of Hurricane Iota through the Caribbean, affecting the north of the country with heavy rains, and especially the archipelago of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina, the risk of new similar climatic phenomena has not ended.
This taking into account that the hurricane season is estimated to extend until November 30 and even longer, the Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies (Ideam) warned this Wednesday morning.

Now, a new alert issued by the Ideam maintains that in the coming days a new storm of great proportions could occur, Due to the formation of a new tropical wave that is currently in Venezuelan waters and that could continue its course towards the Colombian Caribbean, explained Yolanda González, director of the entity:
“It is a tropical wave that has been developing in recent days. It went from a development probability of 20 percent to 40 percent. However, we have the good news that in the last hours its probability dropped to 30 percent ”.

This means that, if the conditions occur, this meteorological activity could lead to a tropical storm or a new hurricane that would affect the north of the country.
At the moment, the force that this new phenomenon will have is not clearly known or if it will reach the category of hurricane in Colombian waters. Likewise, Ideam has not given new reports on how this tropical wave is advancing or if the chances of a major storm emerging have increased.
However, experts consulted by this newspaper maintain that the probabilities seem to have already fallen below 10 percent. It should be clarified that this has not been confirmed by the competent authorities, so the recommendation is to take due precautions.
“Just in the last few hours a tropical wave has transited, which was yesterday in the west and center of the Caribbean region without there being any probability of becoming a tropical cyclone,” says meteorologist Cristian Uscátegui.
What areas could be affected?
What is clear is that it will considerably affect the climate in the north of the country, starting with La Guajira, which at the moment is the region of the country in which this tropical wave is closest.
“This new tropical wave is coming, we continue to monitor it. It will leave us heavy rains in the Caribbean region, La Guajira, Magdalena, Cesar and the Atlantic. From the Ideam we will be issuing the communications and the necessary alerts so that we are informed ”, said González.

Likewise, the official called on the community to take the necessary prevention measures, given that the atypical weather conditions, of which alerts have been issued since last October, could cause all kinds of emergencies of different levels of gravity.
“We continue to monitor this phenomenon. The Caribbean Sea is very warm, warmer than normal, which is typical of climate variability, which we Colombians must prepare for. This is a historic hurricane season on the planet that was combined with the second rainy season, which has been affecting a large part of the national territory ”.
