According to the version given by these people to their relatives, when the winds of more than 200 kilometers per hour mercilessly hit the island and they had to take refuge in the bathroom of their home.

There, Verónica Peña Taylor, her husband, Randon Robinson, and their 12-year-old daughter Valentina Robinson, remained during the early hours and the night of this Monday, holding the door tightly so that it would not open.

According to Carolina Flórez, Verónica’s niece, during Sunday night they communicated with the family at 11:00 at night. Right at that moment they were locked in the bathroom of the house to protect themselves from the winds that had already destroyed the house of their neighbors.

“My aunt told me that they were locked in the bathroom of the house,” says Carolina. The The last one he told me was that the roof had already been removed from the house next door. We did not know anything more until this Tuesday, the uncertainty was horrible ”.

The island with the greatest damage is Providencia, where, according to President Iván Duque, there was damage to 98 percent of the infrastructure and the death of one person was confirmed.

The island woke up devastated after the passage of Hurricane Iota, whose eye reached 8 kilometers from the island and was whipped by winds of up to 230 kilometers per hour.

The first reports indicated that the hospital was practically destroyed. The island is without electricity, water, food and there are a large number of injured.

Carolina points out that only until the afternoon of this Tuesday could contact with the family be established. They find some injuries and the minor had to be transferred to San Andrés to receive medical attention.

“What we know is that they stayed all night holding the bathroom door, which is the area of ​​the house that was best equipped to withstand the passage of the hurricane, to that the wind did not open it – laments Carolina -. According to what the family told rescuers, Randon had to break the bathroom floor to make a hole so he could get out from under the door.

The house was completely destroyed.

This municipality, which has about 5,000 inhabitants, was isolated for about 15 hours with the rest of the country and everything was uncertain until President Iván Duque, from Cartagena, he confirmed that he spoke with the mayor of the municipality, Norberto Gari Hooker, who gave him the first reports.

Carolina, for now, leads a space of economic aid for Providencia. She is from Cartagena but lives in Bogotá and her roots in Providencia are due to her grandmother, who passed away last year.
