Controversy over the figure of the “devil” in the street lights of Medellín

This year, EPM celebrates the 53rd edition of its lighting tradition, which has long ceased to be a light bulb account to become a performance that tells a story.

As usual, Medellín is filled with light with the Christmas lights, one of the main tourist attractions of the city at the end of the year.

But this time, the paisas were not very amused by one of the facilities, which they see no relation to Christmas Eve.

It is the mythical Devil of the Riosucio Carnival, a festival that is celebrated every two years in that Caldas municipality and which is a kind of tribute to the lord of darkness.

It should be remembered that the devil honored at the Carnival of Satan – which is celebrated the first week of January – is nothing more than a buffoon, a smiling and happy little devil who likes to get drunk with guarapo.

According to Empresas Públicas de Medellín, this year a section of the lighting that is available on the Medellín River will pay tribute to the different festivals that Colombia has: the Barranquilla Carnival, the Flower Fair, the Black and White Carnival, the Cali Fair and the Devil’s Carnival.

“In Colombia we have festivals of all kinds such as the Negros y Blancos, the Barranquilla, you go by and see each festival. In this case, see for example the ornaments of Riosucio, that is why you can see images that are used in those celebrations “said the mayor of Medellín, Daniel Quintero.

For their part, many Antioqueños reacted to the idea that they classified as a satanic ritual.

On the other hand, others criticized the negative way in which many citizens took the figure.

In response, the Paisa company confirmed that it is a routine review of the piece and that the performance will light up the December nights in the capital of Antioquia.
