According to the latest balance sheet delivered by President Iván Duque on the situation in Providencia, affected by Hurricane Iota over the weekend, there would be one dead and one missing person in the archipelago. The head of state is already in the area.
“We have an aircraft that has the capacity to reach Providencia. We are with the government team, we arrive with humanitarian aid, we are waiting for our Navy vessels to have the conditions to reach Providencia territory, they are already anchored, near the island and we will be transferring more humanitarian aid today ”, said the president when he arrived in San Andrés and made an overflight over Providencia.
The president in Providencia is accompanied by the Navy, Army and a team of rescuers from the Ministry of Health to evacuate some of the wounded. They will also be the ministers of Health, Fernando Ruiz; Housing, Jonathan Malagón; Tic, Karen Abudinen and Energía, Diego Mesa.
The president had reported that apparently there would be a total destruction of Providencia. An initial rebuild is expected to take 100 days.
“I told the management team that we have to prepare for a total destruction of the infrastructure and, therefore, we have to put in place a reconstruction plan. We have to put ourselves in the task that we can make the greatest transformation in a period of 100 days or less, “said the president in an interview with Radio Nacional de Colombia.
According to the president, the challenge is very big in Providencia, where around 6 thousand people and about 1,500 families live. He said that almost 1,490 homes have been destroyed, but that it should begin with the restoration of energy and water services in that sector, where the National Government has not yet been able to have a presence due to the weather situation.
The head of state also assured that the hospital infrastructure is most likely completely destroyed and that for this reason it will be necessary to arrive with field hospitals to be able to provide help to the population affected by the emergency.
