The events occurred in Vigía del Fuerte, Antioquia, where a man was trying to pick coconuts from a palm tree that lay on the shore of a body of land next to a river. Suddenly, the current of the river increased and crossed the stretch of land where the palm tree was located, causing the detachment of the structure and taking the man with it.

The moments before the accident, the atmosphere was one of joy and amusement on the part of the people who were watching the man, who was trying to pick up the coconuts from the palm tree. However, in a matter of seconds, the laughter turned into screams, noticing that the earth was parting.

Luck accompanied the victim, Arturo, who survived the accident. “The lord is fine, safe and sound. In the same place he was helped by the community and is currently with his family, ”said Luis Darley Cuesta, Secretary of the Government of Vigía del Fuerte.

The official added that the rains have affected the municipality, since 20 houses were located along the basins of the Arquía and Murrí rivers, which were totally destroyed.

In addition, interventions were announced in communities such as Vidrí, Vegaez and Isleta, which have also been affected by the total loss of crops. We believe that there are approximately 3,500 families affected “, stated Cuesta.

The secretary made a call for an “urgent” relocation of the Playa Murrí village.

Another weather accident

The heavy rains caused by hurricane IOTA have affected different areas of the Antioquia territory, including Dabeiba where the overflows and collapses have left a balance of 16 missing people of which 5 have been found so far. “This disaster has also left 497 people affected by 180 families, 20 injured, 67 homes destroyed and 104 damaged, 3 schools affected as well as 5.5 kilometers of road affected”, the Dapard reported.

For his part, President Iván Duque visited the municipality on November 15 in view of the emergency he is experiencing, “Today we have seen heartbreaking, very sad testimonies of families who, due to the avalanche, lost loved ones, also lost their way of life and we are here to help ”, the Colombian president asserted.

He also mentioned the importance of keeping calm, because, according to reports from the Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies (Ideam), difficult weather conditions will continue next month due to the La Niña phenomenon.
