Hurricane Iota reaches category 4 and is already over San Andrés

Hurricane Iota has already reached category 4 and with sustained winds of 225 kilometers per hour it is approaching the coasts of Central America, according to the latest bulletin issued by the National Hurricane Center in Miami.

In the update of its latest bulletin, at 07.00 GMT, and with the information collected by its reconnaissance aircraft, the US hurricane center warns that the power of Hurricane Iota has grown “very rapidly” in the last hours and that it is already it has become “a dangerous Category 4 hurricane.”

According to the center, the sustained wind from the hurricane is already 225 kilometers per hour, with even higher gusts, with a minimum pressure of 935 millibars.

A category 4 hurricane is considered to be one that reaches up to 250 kilometers per hour, causes a rise in the tide of up to 5.5 meters and can cause widespread damage to protective structures, collapse of roofs in small buildings, high erosion of terraces and beaches and floods in inland areas.

Hurricane Iota is located about 70 kilometers northeast of the Colombian island of Providencia and about 310 kilometers east of Cabo Gracias a Dios, in Nicaragua.

The archipelago of San Andrés and Providencia awaits this Monday the onslaught of Hurricane Iota, which left havoc and extensive damage in the north of continental Colombia, while Central America is also preparing, where it is expected to arrive in the Region on Monday night.
