The heavy rains in the country will not give truce until mid-December; Conversely, they will tend to accentuate between the second half of November and the first half of December. This has been confirmed by the Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies (Ideam), which during the last week has recommended extreme care in the populations of the Colombian Caribbean and even in the departments of the central region.

This November 15, in particular, attention is focused on Cartagena, the capital of Bolívar, flooded by 70 percent and with more than 155,000 victims as a result of the rains of November 13 and 14. Eyes are also on the islands of San Andrés and Providencia, as storm Iota in the Caribbean became a Category 1 hurricane, and, according to Ideam, at night it could reach number 3, with 5 being the highest.

“A Category 3 hurricane, with winds of up to 178 km per hour, could generate storm surge and precipitation. The waves may be up to 4 meters high ”, they said in the Ideam about it.

But the concern for the evening-night of this November 15 and the morning of the 16 is not only for San Andrés and Providencia. In its most recent statement, the Ideam suggested “Take special care in areas of high slope located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, La Guajira, north of César and Magdalena”, although the recommendation extends to the southern departments, such as Caquetá and Putumayo.

The possibility of sudden increases, of which cases were recorded in Chocó this weekend, landslides, such as those that have occurred in Santander in recent days, will continue to occur. So will thunderstorms and strong winds, which can turn into gales.

“The second rainy season of the year has tended to be accentuated in recent days mainly with the passage of tropical waves, which have become hurricanes Eta and Iota, which have favored the increase in rainfall in various sectors of the Colombian territory ”, Ideam experts assured.

In the case of Cundinamarca and the capital of the country, the alert for the winter season is in orange, due to the increase in the levels of the Bogotá river. In the upper basin, the municipalities that can be affected are Chía, Cota and Suesca, while in the lower basin the alert is for Mesitas, Apulo, San Antonio del Tequendama, Girardot and Anolaima, according to the Regional Autonomous Corporation of Cundinamarca (CAR).

In Bogotá, the District Institute of Risks and Climate Change (Idiger) is aware of what may happen in the event of an eventual increase in the Salitre or Juan Amarillo, San Francisco, Fucha, Tunjuelo and Balsillas rivers, tributaries to the Bogotá River.
