Faced with the imminent risk of tropical storm Iota becoming a hurricane when it reaches the San Andrés and Providencia archipelago, the island’s authorities have made a series of recommendations to the community to protect their homes and lives against possible emergencies.

“First ensure roofs, have your windows without any problem closing, clean all rainwater systems” explains Willie Gordon, commander of the San Andrés Fire Department.

The Cartagena Risk Management Office asked the neighborhood emergency committees and community action boards to support any contingency that arises this weekend due to the rains. The district installed a unified command post to assess weather behavior in relation to the storm.

In the department of Atlántico the authorities took extreme measures before the Iota pass, according to forecasts this area of the country will be affected throughout the weekend with heavy rains and strong winds.

In La Guajira some rains of varied intensity have been registered in the municipalities of Uribia and Maicao related to the storm.

Twelve beaches in Santa Marta will be closed to the public for prevention this Saturday. The measure was taken due to the high probability that the waves and the wind will increase due to the passage of Iota through the Colombian Caribbean.

Although the forecast may vary, Ideam’s recommendation is to be attentive to the climatic changes that occur in the Caribbean region of the country.
