Ten days after the November 3 elections, Biden was declared the winner in the state of Georgia (contributing 16 electoral votes), while Trump won in North Carolina (15)said various outlets including NBC and CNN.
The Electoral College, made up of 538 members, is the institution in charge of formally deciding who won the presidency of the United States.
In the 2016 election, Trump also garnered 306 votes in the Electoral College when he defeated Democrat Hillary Clinton.
Biden had already been declared the winner on Saturday, when the media projected his triumph in Pennsylvania, which placed him above the threshold of 270 electoral votes. Georgia had not been won by a Democrat since Bill Clinton in 1992.
Trump, who was seeking a second term, had taken a comfortable advantage in that state by counting rural votes, but when those for cities like Atlanta and Savannah appeared, the picture changed in favor of the Democrat. The vote in Georgia was the closest of these elections.
Biden now has a 14,000-vote lead over Trump in that state, waiting for a manual recount to be completed next week.
State election audits never show changes of the magnitude that Trump would need to win.
In traditionally Republican North Carolina, attempts by the Trump campaign to gain the support of the black electorate were insufficient, and the outgoing president could not go beyond his most faithful base, of white men, without university and rural education.
Trump, who has refused to admit defeat, was close on Friday to admit that he lost, but finally limited himself to pointing out: “Time will tell.”
The president, who has not yet congratulated his rival, declared the winner on Saturday according to media projections based on official results, spoke from the White House gardens to report on the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We are not going to confinement,” he promised. “I will not go. This government will not go to a shutdown ”. “Hopefully, what happens in the future, who knows what government it will be, I guess time will tell,” he added.
In the past ten days, Trump has repeated over and over on Twitter that he won re-election, simultaneously pushing for lawsuits to challenge the results without significant evidence.
